AI's biggest spenders feel the credit squeeze
Supply indigestion in IG tech
The primary corporate bond market is experiencing an acute bout of supply indigestion as the unprecedented borrowing blitz from artificial intelligence conglomerates saturates institutional credit portfolios. Benchmark credit default swap (CDS) spreads for technology titans, most notably Oracle, have widened aggressively over the past month.
The Corporate Debt Indigestion
With Oracle, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon issuing over $100 billion in combined debt over a single quarter to fund data center construction and GPU procurement, institutional credit managers have hit statutory exposure limits for single-name technology issuers. To make room for new issues, bond desks are actively dumping existing corporate paper into secondary markets, driving spreads wider across the investment-grade technology complex.
The Cost of Capital Surge
This debt supply overhang is permanently increasing the marginal cost of capital for the AI buildout. Issuers that could previously issue ten-year debt at fifty basis points over Treasuries are now paying spreads north of 120 basis points. The widening credit spreads on tech debt signal that bond markets are no longer willing to underwrite infinite AI infrastructure capex without demanding a steep credit risk premium, bringing financial discipline to Silicon Valley's compute arms race.
